What to Expect at Your Puppy’s First Appointment

At each visit your veterinarian will perform a physical exam and discuss your new addition’s history. Read on for more information about vaccines, parasite prevention and to get an idea of how much all of this will cost.

Puppy Vaccines

Puppies need to receive a series of vaccines in order to make sure that they are protected from transmissible infections. Your veterinarian will determine which vaccines are appropriate based on puppy’s health status and your home environment. Generally puppies receive a series of initial vaccinations administered at approximately 8,12 and 16 weeks of age. At each visit, the veterinarian will perform a physical exam and ensure that your new companion is healthy prior to administering the vaccine.

Puppy Parasites

It is very common for puppies to have internal and/or external parasites – often without initially showing any symptoms. Your veterinarian will recommend a fecal test to check for intestinal parasites and will examine your puppy for any evidence of external parasites like fleas or ear mites. Your veterinarian will provide treatment for any identified parasites and will discuss recommendations for preventive medications.
