Hill’s Pet Food Recall February 1, 2019

Hill’s Prescription Diets implements voluntary recall

FEBRUARY 1, 2019

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is implementing a voluntary recall of 14 Hill’s Prescription Diet canned foods due to potentially elevated levels of Vitamin D caused by a supplier error. Hill’s states that “in most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.”

The recall pertains ONLY to the specific lot numbers and date codes of the canned dog foods listed below.

NO DRY DOG FOOS, CAT FOODS (dry or canned) or TREATS are affected by the recall.

IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED ANY OF THE AFFECTED FOODS:

1. Return food to the clinic at your earliest convenience. A full refund will be provided.

2. If you are uncertain if food that you have purchased is part of the recall, please call the clinic. If possible, take a picture of the food label in question and of the bottom of the can, this can help us to determine if the food is part of the recall.

The recall pertains ONLY to the specific lot numbers and date codes of the canned dog foods listed below.

The SKU and DATE CODE/LOT CODE of the the impacted foods are located on the side and bottom of the cans respectively. See images below.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs but if consumed in excessive amounts can accumulate in the body to toxic levels. Hill’s does not expect the levels of Vitamin D in the recalled food to be high enough to cause toxicity, but if your dog has been eating one of the affected foods you should monitor him/her for any unusual symptoms or behaviour.

Symptoms of Vitamin D Toxicity include vomiting, weakness, loss of appetite and increased urination and usually develop within 12 to 36 hours after ingestion. Extremely high levels of vitamin D can cause more serious conditions like kidney failure and can be fatal if not treated right away. If you are concerned your dog might be showing symptoms, contact the clinic.
